SCHEDULE

This seminar reviews the Ontario Family Law Act and the legal, financial and taxation aspects of marriage, separation and divorce. The definitions and rules applicable to family property, the matrimonial home, child and spousal support obligations and domestic contracts are examined in some detail. The income tax rules and planning opportunities are also an aspect of this seminar.

The detailed implications of income tax and marital breakdown are more fully reviewed in the Family Law and the Income Tax Act seminar. Two instructors, a tax partner with a national firm, and a family law lawyer, will present this informative full-day course.

This Professional Ethics course addresses the standards of behaviour expected by accounting professionals. Since accountants possess specialized knowledge generally not understood by the public, society puts its faith in the accountant to act in an ethical manner. This course will identify the top five ethical issues in the SME sector and what controls can mitigate unethical behaviour.

Formerly Titled: “Audit – Risk Related to Fraud (CAS 240)”

Misstatements in financial statements can arise from fraud or error, the distinguishing factor being fraud is intentional while error is unintentional. The requirements of CAS 240 are designed to assist the auditor in identifying and assessing the risk of material misstatement due to fraud and in designing procedures to detect and respond to such misstatements. This course helps to clarify the requirements of the standard and assists the auditor in meeting their responsibilities related to fraud.

SCHEDULE

This hands‐on seminar focuses on the skills required to design and create an interactive financial model of a company that adheres to the highest industry standards. During this seminar participants will build a financial model. The course material includes model design, logic, construction, financial concepts and accounting treatment. Using switches to create effective scenarios and value drivers, forecasting to build-up revenues and expenses and more will be explained. You will leave this seminar with increased financial modelling skills and knowledge of industry best practices.

Do you know what a blockchain is? Have you heard of Bitcoin? Ethereum? Ripple? They are no longer the stuff of science fiction. A blockchain represents an entirely new method of transacting business. It’s a global, centerless ledger that can immutably record every type of transaction from contracts and mortgages to banking, and from cargo manifests to patient heath records and food quality. Bitcoin is one of many cryptocurrencies that are generating significant value in and of themselves as currency for investments and actual purchases. The technology is new and volatile, but it is here to stay.

This seminar is aimed at exposing participants to advanced techniques in building spreadsheets to be used in the planning and accounting process. Participants will work hands-on along with the facilitator on a practice data-file with supplied examples and learn techniques in managing and consolidating data, and in constructing powerful formulas including tier-based lookups. The course also covers activity in the stock market, interest rates, and how actual investment portfolios from aggressive to conservative with full-service brokers, discount brokers, robo-advisors and deposit brokers have performed.

The first half of this program will focus on email etiquette. It will address issues such as: email length, response time, subject lines, tone, formality, abbreviations, and “I hope all is well”. Participants will be invited to engage in the discussion and share their experiences with the group.

The second half of the program will focus on readability. The concept of “readability” refers to whether or not a client can read an accountant’s writing with ease. Clients wish to receive correspondence that they can read quickly and easily. This half of the program will cover 10 techniques for drafting user-friendly emails and documents.

Analyzing financial statements is no easy task and financial professional do not feel comfortable analyzing them, including many accountants who are well experienced in preparing the statements.

This seminar focuses on how to analyze financial statements, focusing particularly on financial statement ratios and some of the reports that popular systems, such as Bloomberg reports, generate for external users of financial statements. It reviews what constitutes a quality income statement, balance sheet, and free cash flow. It also highlights methods of working capital management and methods for financial professionals to highlight their financial accomplishments to senior management.
