This seminar is aimed at exposing participants to advanced techniques in building spreadsheets to be used in the planning and accounting process. Participants will work hands-on along with the facilitator on a practice data-file with supplied examples and learn techniques in managing and consolidating data, and in constructing powerful formulas including tier-based lookups. Participants will also work on examples that bring out the power of Pivot Tables in managing data and reports, examine techniques for representing accounting data effectively, discover tips and tricks to link data and build formulas spanning multiple sheets quickly, and many other tips and tricks to enhance output and increase productivity.

SCHEDULE

The course will provide participants with tools that will allow them to prepare a purchase price allocation with less support from an outsourced advisor than they otherwise might use. It will teach participants how to segment enterprise cash flows based on capital charges and how to allocate them to different intangible assets, as well as how to assess the relative riskiness of different types of intangible assets that result from a business acquisition or combination.

SCHEDULE

This intensive hands-on workshop will transform participants into Excel power users. The workshop is focused on the pertinent Excel tools that are required in a corporate environment to efficiently analyze and manipulate financial data and to create compelling financial analysis. Focused on increasing efficiencies, you will learn to use some of the most effective, and often lesser known features within Excel, along with keyboard shortcuts and more. People are living twenty or more years after they retire; as a result, Boomers have reinvented the retirement concept. Retirement is no longer a destination for Boomers. Few people develop thoughtful retirement “lifestyle plans” before they retire. Research has shown that developing lifestyle plans, along with financial plans, BEFORE retirement, results in a more fulfilled retirement and a more comprehensive financial plan.

Based on advice from 100 retired people, from all walks of life, including people like Paul Martin, Anna Porter, Ken Dryden, Alvin Curling, and Liona Boyd, this Workshop will teach participants how to use a simple “Retirement Lifestyle Planning Framework”. Participants will learn why it is important to make lifestyle changes while still working, to enhance their retirement.

We have all felt pressured, at one time or another, to respond to a difficult question, opinion, or suggestion, and we may have been unsure how to respond. This CPA Ontario course will teach practical strategies for communicating under pressure.

The course will examine different communication styles, assertive expression, and how to say no. Common situations where pressure occurs, and how the body responds to stress will also be explored. Participants will learn how to tap into their resourcefulness and develop conflict resolution skills to reach their goals.

Disclosure and presentation is critical to telling the true story of a firm’s profit and loss, financial position, and cash flows to users of financial statements. This seminar reviews the realities and best practices for disclosure and presentation requirements of Part II – Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE).

The previously accepted method of building wealth doesn’t work anymore. The truth when it comes to personal finances is simple: People’s quest to secure a comfortable retirement often ends up making them poor and others rich.

When learning on-the-job, Excel users understandably develop familiarity with those features that impact their output and jobs. This condensed High-intensity workshop is designed to give such users a good grounding in a broad range of features and techniques that includes productivity techniques in data management, getting familiar with the various aspects of data analysis and formula building, troubleshooting data errors, conditionality and lookups, tapping into the power tools like Pivot Tables and other productivity tools. Participants will work hands-on along with the facilitator on a practice data-file with supplied examples.

With the addition of the Eligible Dividend regime in 2006, the addition of the eligible RDTOH account in 2019, and changing tax rates for eligible and ineligible dividends, tax planners are confronted with a multitude of tax accounts that need to be considered in conjunction with each other. This seminar will provide a detailed review of the key tax accounts for private corporations and tax planning where multiple tax accounts can either be used or impacted. The seminar also includes a series of mini-cases that demonstrate the issues that need to be evaluated when dealing with these accounts.

This seminar will focus on the many tax issues that arise, from a compliance and planning perspective, when shutting down a corporation. It will focus exclusively on private companies. Common traps and planning opportunities that arise when shutting down corporations will also be discussed.

Whether for performance reasons, planning reasons, or just because of the evolution of the life-cycle of a corporation (or its shareholders), CPAs are often required to assist in the “shutting down” of a corporation. This may occur via dissolution, amalgamation, or wind-up. This course discusses the key tax considerations to address in each of these scenarios.

TOPICS INCLUDE:

• Revisiting the concepts of Range Names and their use in formula building
• Understanding Lookups and limitations of VLOOKUP
• Introducing the INDEX function
• Exploring the use of the INDEX function with the MATCH function for creating Lookups that are not constrained to the left column in a dataset
• Understanding the more advanced aspects of the INDEX function’s ability to return references
• Understanding the “Approximate Match” method of lookups and their use in Tier-based calculations
• Understanding Error Trapping for handling #NA errors
• Exploring various kinds of Error Trapping formulas including newer functions available in versions 2013 and later

This course provides participants with an overview of the requirements of the new Canadian Standard for Related Services (CSRS) 4200 and its impact on the planning, implementation and documentation of a compilation engagement.

The CPA Canada Handbook standard on Compilation Engagements has been updated to CSRS 4200 – Compilation Engagements. This significantly changes some of the requirements for conducting a compilation engagement, including additional documentation and disclosure requirements. CSRS 4200 will be mandatory for Compilation Engagements on years ended on or after December 14, 2021, and practitioners are advised to familiarize themselves with the new standard in advance to prepare for implementation and communicate the changes to staff, clients and other stakeholders.

Data breaches, cyber-attacks, and ransomware are examples of the most significant existential risks facing businesses today. There are threat actors worldwide that entirely focus on stealing organizational data, stealing economic resources, and disrupting commerce. They use complex social engineering attacks, pervasive phishing messages, intricate malware, and other highly effective techniques. For example, publicly reported data breaches now exceed 100k annually. These breaches resulted in releasing the personal information of millions of people worldwide, billions of dollars of compromised organizational assets, and putting countless people in harm’s way.

This professional development course provides participants with an overview of the requirements of the newly issued Canadian Standard for Quality Management (CSQM1 and CSQM2) and related amendments to Canadian Auditing Standards (CAS 220) and its impact on the quality control processes for assurance practitioners. SCHEDULE

This seminar reviews the Ontario Family Law Act and the legal, financial and taxation aspects of marriage, separation and divorce. The definitions and rules applicable to family property, the matrimonial home, child and spousal support obligations and domestic contracts are examined in some detail. The income tax rules and planning opportunities are also an aspect of this seminar.
