Business Ethics: Good for Business and the Right Thing to Do

The reasons to work ethically are obvious: your professional designation depends on it; it is crucial to your reputation and long term career success; cleaning up from ethical lapses is incredibly harsh and expensive; it is a valuable principle in its own right; and it makes your organization, industry and country better places to live and work.

The great challenge is how to ensure you are always working ethically even when you are charting new territory, pushing the boundaries, and innovating; and how to ensure you are being ethical in our complex and ever changing world.

This hands-on, participatory workshop will guide you through a few classic ethical frameworks and supply you with practical tools and techniques you can use to be ethical and maintain high standards of ethics on your team.

CPA Ethics - Public Practice

This is a refresher course for CPAs in public practice, updating their knowledge and practice of Ethics in the Accounting profession. The participants will test themselves on their knowledge, work on actual problems individually and in small groups, and discuss cases to help them understand the difficulties that may exist, and that the best decisions in a particular situation are not necessarily obvious. The instructor will review the Code of Professional Conduct (CPC), decisions of the Discipline Committee, as well as other relevant sources with emphasis on interacting with clients and governmental authorities. In addition, the theory of Ethics will be reviewed. The attendees will find that they are better able to recognize potential problems and act to reflect best practices in their own accounting firm.

Ethics at Our Core

NOTE: This course description has been revised to include updates to the course material for 2022. If you have any questions, please contact pdevents@cpaontario.ca

Adherence to the CPA Code of Professional Conduct goes beyond a professional obligation: it constitutes a source of pride, value, and competitive distinction. While stakeholders rely on an accountant’s judgment and guidance, ethical dilemmas can create challenges in determining ways in which to implement the best course of action, especially in times of rapid change and uncertainty. This seminar helps participants to develop skills for dealing with ethical dilemmas and using appropriate decision making in their workplaces, to help organizations navigate opportunities and challenges.

Behavioral Ethics: Decision-making Biases and Heuristics

VIDEO LEARNING

Learn behavioural ethics from “Tipper X”, one of the most prolific informants in securities fraud history.

Why do seemingly honest, hard-working people who start out with the best intentions commit unethical, or in some cases, illegal acts? What is it that leads them astray? There is no simple reason why good employees turn bad or make poor decisions. Unethical behaviour is often the result of a combination of cultural and personal factors. No one is immune to carrying out inappropriate behaviour in the workplace.

The kind of decision making errors presented in this course come from a field of study known as behavioural ethics, which draws on psychology, cognitive science, evolutionary biology and related disciplines to determine how and why people make ethical and unethical decisions.
