This newly revised course has shifted online into three, live, instructor-led sessions. We recognize that online learning a vastly different experience from an in-person seminar and our instructors have adapted the interactive sessions to include regularly scheduled breaks and digital breakout rooms for group discussions. Our goal is to make your experience more convenient as we navigate the new reality of virtual learning.

  • Structured Query Language (SQL) is the standardized language for manipulating, analyzing and summarizing data stored in databases. The ability to ask a database a question and have an answer returned is the cornerstone of analytics.

Many financial professionals rely on others to perform queries on data sets for them, leading to low visibility of the database contents. With a little knowledge of SQL, the user can have greater visibility to the data, leading to new questions and uses for the database.

The goal of this course is to expose students to SQL through simple examples that build through the day and convince the participants that business professionals can interact with databases directly.

    • There is no prerequisite to this course but it will help to have basic familiarity with the Windows system environment (copying and unzipping files).
    • Participants are required to bring a Microsoft Windows laptop computer to this workshop. Microsoft Access 2010 for Windows will be used in the workshop. Participants may use versions 2007, 2013 or 2016 as well, though differences in capability may exist in some modules. Some of the features may not be available in earlier versions and where possible, workarounds will be demonstrated.
    • Most of the day will be spent using Microsoft Access, however, at the end of the day, we will also demonstrate SQL in the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express environment - FREE to download from microsoft.com . Important: Click the Download button, and then choose the ENU\x64\SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe file (this ‘Express with Tools’ file is almost 700 MB – please download in advance of the course).

    • Learn how to use the six SQL clauses: SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING and ORDER BY
    • Explore Data Definition Language to create objects
    • Write Functions to enhance expressions
    • Deal with NULL values
    • Compose Action Queries to change table data
    • Apply SQL in Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express

This seminar is designed for financial professionals who want to learn how SQL can allow them to interact directly with databases to ask questions and retrieve answers for data analysis.
